Most women are not informed of the changes that will take place with their vaginas due to childbirth. They tend to accept the changes as natural and aren’t, for the most part, aware that anything can be done to alleviate the changes. The most common complaints are “I don’t feel as snug down there as I used to” or “I just don’t feel the same sensations with sex that I felt before childbirth.” These complaints are usually not discussed with anyone because of embarrassment or thinking that these are changes that women “just live with.” There are very minimal surgical corrections that can be performed to alleviate these and other sexual and cosmetic complaints. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is accomplished by making an incision along the back side of the vagina (yes, you are asleep) and sewing the supporting muscles together in the midline to decrease caliber and increase contractibility. These surgeries are done in a certified, free standing surgery center and anesthesia is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist. The entire procedure usually takes about an hour and patients are discharged from the center within 1 -2 hours after surgery. Post operative recovery varies, but most
are able to resume regular work activity within 1 – 2 weeks
and sexual activity within 6 weeks. Post operative pain is significant
for the first few days but is always well controlled with oral pain
medicine.
